On the evening of Saturday, October 16, 2021 a group of friends and donors to Fr. Joe’s Villages including Barbara Menard gathered at The U.S. Grant Hotel in downtown San Diego for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres and an update on the programs and happenings at Fr. Joe’s Villages. This was the first in-person event since the death of Fr. Joe Carroll. Deacon Jim Vargas, President and CEO of Father Joe’s Villages provided and update on all of the measures they have taken to protect the residents and staff from Covid 19. The staff was responsible for giving case management and housing to hundreds of homeless individuals in the shelter at the San Diego Convention Center. Benton Place was opened after the former motel was converted into individual apartments for low income and former homeless residents. The new Saint Teresa of Calcutta Villa is under construction at 14th Street. This Villa will provide apartments and help more than 500 “neighbors in need” to quote Fr. Joe. The building will include a memorial promenade with pavers honoring Father Joe Carroll. In recognition of the years of support for the Villages, Menard Family Foundation will have a 12×12 paver in the promenade.
