Named in memory of Ralph George, MD, former chief of staff at Scripps Mercy Hospital, this annual lecture hosted by the Friends of Mercy through the department of medical education offers a special presentation on humanism and ethics in medicine. Barbara J. Menard joined those who gathered on Tuesday, September 25, 2012 to hear Sr. Carol Keehan, DC, President and Chief Executive Officer of Catholic Health Association speak on “The Future of the Affordable Care Act, from the Perspective of a Catholic Health Care Executive.” She stated that we are in a new era in health care and that the overall health system is unsustainable and unfair. Technology and scientific research are driving change. Discussion followed about the question, “What does it mean to be a Catholic hospital?” in the midst of the health care reform.
