On Sunday, November 5, 2023, the first annual convening of San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance 2116 Advisors gathered at San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Paul A, Baribault, President and CEO created this group of friends and donors to act as consultants for the future of San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. Barbara J. Menard was invited to this group and was interviewed prior to this event to share responses to questions concerning the Zoo’s future. The theme for the day was “Conservation Inspiration.” Attendees were taken to an area at the Safari Park where they could interact with conservation science and wildlife health experts who are leading efforts in San Diego and across the globe. There were ten Conservation Stations including Cougar Vision where wireless trail cameras can track wildlife; Frozen Zoo where you could learn how small pieces of tissues become cell lines; Genetic Research that they hope will eventually lead to a Southern White Rhino becoming a surrogate for a Northern White Rhino. With virtual reality technology, attendees were able to experience the upcoming Denny Sanford Elephant Valley and step into the world where the elephants will roam freely. After lunch there was a panel presentation and then the group was divided into smaller groups for close encounters with one of the animal species. Barbara selected rhinos and was able to pet one of the Southern White Rhinos.
